ELEVATOR PITCH:

Imagine the great overseer of Hell going to therapy, but it always goes wrong somehow.

Having occasionally vacationed from his duties as King of Hell to Earth and dabble in a variety of pleasures, his most recent foray to 21st century Los Angeles becomes a permanent stay as he resolves he doesn't want to return to Hell. Tired of living at the will of his almighty father, God, he cuts off his wings so the only way he can return is the single one-time-use Pentecostal Coin he's brought with him meaning he has to put a lot of consideration into staying or going back.

And then, a young singer he'd made a deal with is brutally murdered and he becomes personally invested in solving it. After developing chemistry with the lead detective on the case, Chloe Decker, he decides it would be amusing to become a police consultant and work with the LAPD. This spirals as he juggles the LAPD with the celestial elements of his life, which include his older brother Amenadiel trying to get him to go back to Hell, trying all sorts of things including hiring a corrupt cop to kill Lucifer when it comes to light that he has somehow become mortal - some of the time.

Many things happen from this point (five seasons worth, woof), and at the core of it all is Lucifer coming to terms with the fact that he considers Los Angeles his home. Not Heaven, not Hell, Earth - but especially LA, his nightclub LUX, his penthouse filled with a collection of all sorts of books throughout the ages including a leather-bound copy of Hamlet with a personal message from Shakespeare himself inside the cover as well as a grand piano, and - as much as he may not understand it, and might deny it - the people he's come to know and cherish.

There are multiple moments where he's forced to evaluate his relationship with his father and human faith in relation to that. A tragically short-lived friendship with a priest who fully understands who Lucifer is, a man who claims to be God possessing a human (but is actually just being influenced by a divine object on his belt buckle), being tasked with returning his escaped mother, the Goddess of Creation, to Hell... These all force him to confront his frustrations with God's presence or lack thereof in anyone's life and not just his own. He also is faced constantly with people who don't believe him when he tells the truth, no matter how vehement he is that he doesn't lie, and grapples with times where he is personally confronted with humans who try to blame their guilt and sins on him instead of taking personal responsibility.

His greatest motivator throughout everything he goes through, and why he commits - beyond thinking it'd be a lark - to working with the LAPD, is that he has a great understanding of justice and is very good at punishing people for their crimes thanks to the role he was forced into by God. Even with as much as he dreads falling in line with his father's plan, he also doesn't shy away from flexing this in times of need. Of course, when he commits too hard to it, he also tends to have a crisis of identity regarding his own free will and then throws himself off the deep end into deeply sexual and substance-fueled hedonism or sometimes more mundane Netflix, junk food, and cozy clothes escapism to separate himself from this assigned role.
